It's so Hard to Find Good Talent...Tell Me More

It’s so hard to find great talent in this market.  All the good ones are taken.  That’s the word on the street anyways…..

Attracting Talent with an Engaging Story

In today’s competitive job market, I’ve realized just how challenging it can be to attract top talent. Candidates have so many choices, and it’s crucial for us to stand out and show why joining our team is a game-changer. That’s where I believe a well-crafted job description becomes a powerful tool. For me, it’s not just about listing responsibilities—it’s an opportunity to tell a story that informs and inspires potential candidates to imagine a future with us.

So, when I sit down to write a job description, I start by asking: What’s in it for them? Beyond salary and benefits, I think about what truly matters—growth opportunities, learning experiences, and career advancement. I want candidates to see the path they could take with us, to feel excited about what’s possible.

Next, I focus on what makes us unique. It’s more than listing tasks or qualifications. I want to communicate the intangibles—our company culture, values, and the sense of community we offer. What makes our workplace special? What sets us apart from others in the industry? These are the things that spark interest and make people want to take that next step.

I also make sure to highlight both the physical and emotional aspects of the job. From the location and work environment to the sense of purpose and personal growth they’ll find here, I want to paint a complete picture. People want to know not just where they’ll work but how it will make them feel.

Another important question I always consider is the long-term potential. What does the future look like for someone who joins us? Whether it’s career advancement, skill-building, or leadership opportunities, I want candidates to see that we’re invested in their growth for the long haul.

Most importantly, I see job descriptions as advertisements for our company. They should tell a compelling story that captures attention and showcases our strengths. Instead of just listing qualifications, I use language that inspires and conveys the excitement of being part of our team. My goal is for candidates to envision themselves here and to feel like this opportunity was tailor-made for them.

I also ensure the description is detailed and specific. I include everything from hard and soft skills to software requirements and unique role expectations. By being thorough, I can help attract candidates who not only have the right experience but also align with our company culture.

For me, the ultimate goal is to engage potential employees right from the start. I want them to feel drawn in by the possibilities and to see the job description as more than just a document—it’s a glimpse into what their future could look like with us. When we take an out-of-the-box approach, we set ourselves apart and create a lasting impression.

In the end, I’ve learned that a job description isn’t just about outlining duties; it’s a chance to tell our story and show why we’re the right choice. By focusing on our unique offerings, addressing both present and future opportunities, and telling an engaging narrative, we can attract the right talent and make a real impact. For me, there’s nothing more exciting than watching a thoughtfully crafted job description bring incredible people into our team.
